Magic Mugs and Standard Photo Mugs
Two different products sit in this collection. A standard custom photo mug is white ceramic with your image printed permanently onto the surface: what you see is what you get, hot or cold. A colour-changing magic mug starts out black, and the heat of the drink clears the coating to reveal the photograph underneath. The reveal takes a few seconds and reverses as the mug cools, which is why these are the ones bought as surprises and the ones children want to demonstrate to visitors.
How Much Photo Fits Around a Custom Mug
A mug has more usable area than people expect: a full wrap gives you roughly a panorama, so a collage of four to six photos, a group shot, or a picture on one side with text on the other all work. If you want a single face to be the focus, a centred image on one side reads better than a wrap. Our designers lay out multi-photo collages at no extra charge and will show you the arrangement in the proof before anything is printed.
Print Durability and Dishwashers
The printing is bonded to the glaze rather than sitting on top of it, so a photo mug from us takes daily use, dishwasher cycles and microwave reheating without the image lifting at the edges. That is the usual failure of transfer-paper mugs sold cheaply online. Magic mugs are also dishwasher safe, though we suggest the top rack and avoiding the longest, hottest cycles to keep the coating responding cleanly for years rather than months.
Choosing Images for Personalized Mugs
Bright, well-lit photos print best. Very dark images lose detail against black-coated magic mugs in particular, since there is less tonal room to work with. Phone photos are perfectly adequate. Our team colour-corrects for ceramic printing, which shifts slightly warmer than a screen, crops for the wrap and removes distracting backgrounds where that improves the result. If a file is too small for the size printed, we say so before production.
