An Air Sign Named for Water

Aquarius is a water bearer pouring from a jar, and it is classed as an air sign. The contradiction is old and real rather than a modern muddle: the constellation sits in a region of sky the Babylonians called the Sea, surrounded by fish, a river and a sea goat, while the elemental classification came from a different system entirely and never reconciled with the picture. The stars themselves are faint and spread wide. The one thing worth hunting for inside them is the Helix Nebula, the glowing shell thrown off by a dying star and one of the closest of its kind to us.

Distance as a Trait

Aquarius is traditionally associated with independence, ideas held at arm’s length and a certain detachment from the people holding the opposite view. It is the sign least likely to want something sentimental, which is the argument for an object built on a star chart rather than on a sentiment. Nothing here says anything about the relationship between giver and recipient, and for this particular sign that restraint is the feature.
