3D Crystal for Libra

The scales engraved inside a block of optical crystal as a figure of connected points, the constellation drawn over them, the symbol above and the name below. Libra gifts are the odd case in this series, because every other sign is a creature or a person and this one is an object. A set of scales rendered as a star pattern in a block of glass is a more literal piece than the other eleven, and it is the only one that reads as a shape rather than as a character.

The Claws That Became Scales

Libra is a relatively late invention. In the older Greek sky those stars were part of Scorpius, forming the claws, and the two brightest of them still carry the Arabic names Zubenelgenubi and Zubeneschamali, which mean the southern claw and the northern claw. The Romans separated them out and gave them to the balance. So this is the one constellation in the zodiac that was taken from another, which is an oddly fitting origin for the sign of negotiated arrangements.

Balance as the Whole Idea

Libra is traditionally associated with fairness, diplomacy and a dislike of conflict strong enough that deciding anything takes a while. It is the sign most tied to other people rather than to the self, which is why it is often bought as a gift between partners or given by one friend to another rather than to a relative. The symmetry of the engraving suits a surface where it can be seen straight on, a shelf at eye level rather than a low table.

Sizes, Light and Ordering

The small stands 3.15 inches tall on a 1.97 inch square base and weighs 1.09 pounds; the medium is 2.76 by 3.94 at 2.28; the large 3.15 by 4.72 at 3.14. The engraving is cut at varying depths inside the crystal, so it holds volume and nothing sits on the surface to be scratched or worn away. An LED base can be added, and on a symmetrical figure the even light from below suits the design better than daylight from one side does. Crystal accessories, a cleaning kit, gift wrapping and a pop up greeting card can be ordered with it. Since the design is ready, no photograph is needed and there is no proof to approve. Gift box included, made in 1-2 business days, US delivery in 3-5.
