An urn shaped as a headstone: 4.72 inches across, the same tall, 2.36 deep, and four and a half pounds of optical crystal above a base that holds a sealed compartment for the ashes. It is meant to be looked at rather than put away, which is why the photograph is engraved inside the crystal at depth and the container is the part you do not see.

Why Only One Face Is Recommended

The keepsake crystals in this category take up to five figures. This takes one, and that is not a limitation of the engraving field but of what the object is for. An urn holds one person, and a portrait of that person alone is what families come back to. A photograph with other people in it raises a question every time somebody looks at it. At 4.72 inches square there is generous crystal for a single head and shoulders, and the face ends up larger here than on anything else in the range.

The Largest and Heaviest of the Four

Four and a half pounds is roughly ten times the weight of the compact urn in the same group, and it shows in how the piece behaves in a room. It does not get moved around, it needs a surface chosen for it, and it reads from across the room rather than only up close. The arched headstone outline is deliberate and traditional, and for a family who would rather the object said nothing about a cemetery, the plain rectangle in this group does the same work without the shape.

Free text engraving is included, and on an urn it is used almost every time: a name with two dates, sometimes a line beneath. The background of the photograph can be kept or removed, and removing it is the more common choice here because it leaves the face alone in the crystal.
