Red Hearts 2D Crystal Frame

A square of crystal 7.87 inches on each side and 1.18 thick, weighing close to seven pounds, with a red border running around the engraved picture and a small red heart set into opposite corners. It is the only piece in this series built as a frame rather than as a shape, and the only one where you choose whether the image stands upright or lies wide.

On every other crystal the proportion is fixed, so the photograph is cropped to fit the object. Here the object follows the photograph. A group shot taken wide keeps its width, and a picture of one person standing keeps its height, which means nobody has to decide at the ordering stage which side of the picture matters less. Anyone who has had a favourite photo trimmed to fit a frame knows how much that decision costs.

Why the Border Changes How It Reads

Clear crystal takes on whatever is behind it, so a plain block on a shelf against a pale wall can look washed out from across the room. The red surround gives the engraving a hard edge and separates it from the background, and the effect is closest to a printed photograph mounted behind glass. Flat engraving suits that reading: it is graphic and contained rather than sculptural, and it handles scans of old prints, certificates and documents as cleanly as it handles a recent phone photograph. Up to four figures are recommended, and the 7.87 inch width gives each of them room.
