XXL Wood Light Base

A wooden LED base 13.46 inches wide, 6.1 deep and 1.77 tall, weighing 2.59 pounds. It is by a long way the largest base we make, nearly twice the width of the large one, and it exists for a small number of pieces that nothing else will light properly.

Built for the Statement Pieces

An iceberg, a Max block, a wide landscape crystal: these are objects where the engraving runs across six or seven inches of glass, and lighting them from a four inch base produces a bright centre with two dark ends. At 13.46 inches across there is lit surface under the whole footprint, so the image is evenly fed from one side to the other. It is also tall enough at 1.77 inches to raise a heavy block clear of the surface, which matters on a mantelpiece where the piece is seen from below.

Weight and Where It Can Go

Two and a half pounds before the crystal is on it, and over a foot of width, means this needs a surface chosen in advance. A console table, a sideboard or a wide shelf will take it; a bedside table will not, and a floating shelf should be checked. The depth of 6.1 inches is nearly twice that of the smaller bases, because the pieces it is made for are deep as well as wide.

Warm White or Colour

Steady warm white or a slow colour cycle, as with the smaller wooden bases. At this width the colour setting washes across a lot of glass and is the more dramatic of the two, which is the argument both for and against using it on a portrait. For anything with a face in it warm white keeps the skin tones neutral; for an abstract or a landscape engraving the cycle is a reasonable choice.

When Not to Buy It

If the crystal is a standard heart or rectangle this is the wrong base, and not only on cost: a four inch piece standing in the middle of a thirteen inch lit platform looks like merchandise in a window rather than something somebody chose. The medium base matches the common sizes, the large one covers the bigger blocks, and this one starts to make sense only past that. Ships in 3-5 days in the US.
