Which Finish Actually Fits

This is less a matter of taste than of what is already in the room. Silver sits with chrome, steel, white paint, grey and anything modern; gold sits with brass, wood, warm paint and anything traditional. A stand is going to live on a mantel or a shelf permanently rather than disappear into a tree, so it has to agree with the furniture around it in a way a tree ornament never does.

A note on ornaments: the hook sits at a fixed height, so a small ornament hangs higher inside the frame than a large one. Neither looks wrong, but the circle is the stand that handles small ornaments most gracefully, since there is no enclosing shape for them to be lost inside.

Gift-wise it is often bought alongside the ornament rather than separately, which is worth doing, since very few people think to buy a stand for something they have not yet owned for a year.
