When Five Is the Number

Five grandchildren. Five siblings. A family of five, one each. A set of five is almost always distributed rather than kept, which is why they arrive boxed: the box is what makes the set a gift rather than a delivery. Grandparents are the most common buyers, usually in the first week of December and usually with five different photographs.

Engraved Rather Than Printed

Each photograph is cut inside the crystal with a laser, so it appears as a pale three-dimensional image rather than a colour one. Colour is lost and depth is gained: the picture shifts as the ornament turns, which a flat printed image does not do. An engraved heart reads as a keepsake. A printed one reads as a tree decoration. For a set being handed to five people, the first is usually the intention.

Weight

Each piece measures 2.56 by 2.17 inches at 0.24 inches thick, about 0.08 pounds, three times the thickness of our printed glass ornaments. Five of them have noticeable weight as a set, and individually they want a branch that will take them rather than a thin outer twig.

Dark photographs engrave better than they print, which is worth knowing if the pictures you have are old or were taken indoors.

A premium option adds gift wrapping and a cleaning kit to the set, which on engraved crystal is worth taking, since these are handled far more than printed ornaments and show fingerprints accordingly.

The heart crops sharply at the bottom and falls away at the top corners, so each photograph should be a close portrait rather than a group. If some of your five pictures have several people in them, the octagonal set is the better order.
