Engraved Rather Than Printed

The image is cut inside the crystal with a laser rather than printed onto a surface, so it sits within the block and appears as a pale three-dimensional form rather than as a colour photograph. Colour is lost. What you gain is depth, a photograph that changes as the ornament turns, and an object that reads as a keepsake rather than as a decoration. For a memorial piece in particular, most people prefer the engraved version once they have seen both.

Why Three

Three is the household number. One each for three children, three siblings, or the three branches of a family that gather at Christmas. It is also the set people buy to split: one kept and two given, which is the most common use and the reason these come boxed rather than loose.

Weight and Substance

Each ornament is 2.36 inches across and 0.24 inches thick, which is three times the thickness of our printed glass, at about 0.09 pounds apiece. They feel like objects rather than decorations, and on a tree they want a branch that will take the weight rather than a thin outer twig.

Dark subjects engrave better than they print, which inverts the usual advice: a black dog or a photograph taken in low light often comes out stronger in crystal than on printed glass.
