How 3D Laser Engraving Works
Are you wondering how we turn an ordinary photo into a stunning 3D image? Do you want to know how we can engrave your pictures inside our crystal keepsakes without damaging the surface? Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how we create our custom crystal products.
From 2D Photo to Digital 3D Model
First, we need a high-quality photo. That’s why we carefully screen every photo upload we receive for anything that could potentially cause a flaw in the crystal engraving, such as blurriness or poor lighting.
Once we approve your photo, our designers start optimizing it for the 3D conversion process. They use specialized photo editing software to remove the background of your image and clean up any small imperfections.
Finally, we upload the enhanced image into our 3D conversion program, which builds a digital 3D model from your photo.
Inside the 3D Laser Engraving Machine
This is where the real magic begins. Once we have a 3D model to work with, we use state-of-the-art laser technology to plot the light points in your image to map out the coordinates for your 3D engraving.
When we’re ready to start engraving, we load the crystal of your choice into one of our 3D laser engraving machines. This machine uses the coordinates from your model to create tiny etchings at varying depths within your crystal to build a 3D image.
Our lasers are non-invasive, which means they bypass the exterior of your crystal to engrave only the specifically plotted points. That’s what allows us to create a stunningly precise sub-surface image every time.
What’s the Difference Between 2D and 3D?
The difference between 2D and 3D engraved images starts with their laser coordinates. To create a 2D engraving, we plot the light points from your photo onto a plane. This creates a flat image inside your crystal.
3D models, on the other hand, are plotted at various depths to create an image that’s convex (curved toward you) in the front, and concave (curved away from you) in the back. Once engraved in your crystal, the front side of the image will appear almost like a statue suspended in mid-air. The back side creates a mesmerizing 3D illusion; whatever angle you view it from, your image will appear to move to meet your gaze. We call this neat trick the “following” effect.
