A rectangle keyring keeps the proportions of the original photograph. Nothing is cropped into a curve, so a portrait with shoulders, a couple, a car or a house all fit as they were shot. A metal cap and ring are fitted to the top of the crystal, and this is the 2D version: the image is engraved as a single tonal layer inside the glass rather than as a depth model. That difference decides which photos it suits, and for a good number of them it is the better of the two.
A 3D engraving converts your picture into a depth model, which is remarkable with one clear subject and unconvincing when the file has nothing to build that depth from. A 2d keychain takes a different route: it renders the tones that are actually in the photograph, flat and crisp. That makes it the format for scans of older prints, images taken at a distance, and anything where a depth conversion would have to invent detail that was never captured. The result reads cleanly at keyring size, where fussy detail is lost anyway.
This shape reads as a practical thing on a practical set of keys, which matters on a work keyring where a heart would say more than you want it to. The engraving sits inside the crystal, out of reach of keys and coins, unlike printed or resin keychains that abrade within months. Names, dates and short lines of text can be engraved alongside the image at no extra cost, so a registration number, an address or a birth date fits as naturally as a face.
Send any photo you like, including a scan of a print from decades ago. Our designers prepare it for flat engraving, which usually means tightening the crop and strengthening the contrast, then email you a free proof. Nothing is engraved until you approve it. Three sizes are made, 1.18, 1.38 and 1.57 inches tall, each recommended for one or two faces. Sets are common here: one image, several keyrings, for a family or a team. Gift box included, made in 1-2 business days, US delivery in 3-5.

A heart requires the photograph to be cropped into a curve, which usually costs the edges of a group or the top of a subject. A rectangle keychain keeps the original proportions, so it suits two or three people side by side, a portrait with shoulders, a pet standing, a car or a building. It is also the shape people pick when they want something that does not announce itself, which is the practical reason it outsells the heart for men and for work keys.
The engraving is one tonal layer rather than a depth model. That makes a 2d keychain the right call for photographs with several faces, cluttered backgrounds, low resolution, or scans of prints from decades ago — cases where a 3D conversion has to guess at depth and the result looks soft. For a single clear subject against a plain background, the 3D version of the same shape gives more drama.
The subject needs to be close in the original photo. One or two faces filling the frame engrave clearly; a distant group will not survive the reduction. Our designers assess the file, crop, brighten, remove distracting backgrounds and tell you honestly if another photo would give a better result before anything is engraved.
The clear crystal beside the image takes a name, initials, a date or a short phrase. A custom rectangle keychain with a name and birth date is the most common configuration, and there is no extra design charge for the wording.
Upload your photo at checkout. A designer emails a free proof, usually within a day, and revises it until you approve. The finished keychain ships in a gift box with a microfiber cloth within 3-5 business days in the US. Cleaning is a wipe with that cloth; the engraving is sealed inside the crystal.
