For October, we chose a story about courage, love, and a trip of a lifetime. Here is our October winning story, A Trip We Will Never Forget.

A Trip We Will Never Forget

“My wife, Roni, and I had dreamed for years about taking the trip of a lifetime. On September 2, 2026, that dream finally became a reality as we set off on a 24-day adventure through Italy.

About eight days into our journey, we visited Pompeii. It was everything we had imagined - spectacular, historic, and unforgettable. While walking along the ancient cobblestone streets, I asked Roni to stop and pose for a picture.

As she posed, she slipped and fell. In the process, her foot became caught between two cobblestones, twisting badly as she hit the ground. It was immediately clear that something was seriously wrong.

After hours spent over two days in an inadequate emergency room, we learned that Roni had fractured her fibula near her ankle. Suddenly, our dream vacation included crutches, a walking boot, and a lot of uncertainty.

For many people, that might have been the moment to call it quits and go home.

But Roni isn't most people.

She never complained. Not once.

Even when our next hotel required climbing 95 steep steps up and down to reach our room - a detail the hotel advertisement somehow forgot to mention - Roni simply kept going. She smiled, pushed through the pain, and somehow managed to keep enjoying the journey. More than anything, I believe she did it because she didn't want her injury to take away from the experience for anyone else in our group.

And it didn't.

Our vacation was an incredible success, largely because Roni refused to let an unexpected setback define it.

As our trip drew to a close, I found myself thinking about what we would remember most. I realized that, years from now, we probably won't remember every museum, every meal, or every beautiful view.

We'll remember Pompeii.

We'll remember the fall.

We'll remember the crutches, the boot, the stairs, the challenges - and most of all, we'll remember how Roni responded to them.

She reminded me that we don't always get to choose what happens to us, but we do get to choose how we respond. A setback can change the course of a journey without ruining the journey itself.

I am incredibly fortunate to be married to such an amazing woman.

I also wanted to find a way to preserve this story - not simply as a reminder of an unfortunate accident, but as a reminder of Roni's strength and the lesson that came from it. I had a special idea to memorialize the moment, and ArtPix was able to bring that idea to life by creating a beautiful crystal.

They worked so quickly that the crystal was waiting for us when we arrived home from Italy.

Roni loved it. It sits proudly on an end table in our living room for everyone to see.

Now, whenever we look at it, we won't just see a picture from our Italian adventure. We'll see a reminder of courage, perseverance, love, and the importance of refusing to let a setback define us.

Sometimes the moments we never planned for become the moments we remember forever.

And for me, this story will always be about much more than a broken ankle.

It's about the incredible woman I get to share my life with.”
