August Storytelling Winner: The Love Behind the Song

For August, we chose a story about love, music, and an unexpected reunion more than 50 years in the making. Here is our August winning story, The Love Behind the Song.

The Love Behind the Song

The gal in the photo and I first met during my freshman year of college. We became close friends, though we were both engaged to other people at the time. Life eventually took us in different directions, and after I changed schools to pursue my music career, we lost touch. But through all those years, she never left my mind or my heart.

Over the decades, I built a 62-year career in music and was honored to be inducted into the Illinois & Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Along the way, I wrote many songs inspired by her, including Love You So Much. The words engraved on my ArtPix 3D heart come from that very song.

More than fifty years after we first met, she unexpectedly appeared in the meet-and-greet line after one of my concerts. I immediately recognized her and called out her name. She smiled, surprised that I still knew her, and we've been together ever since. Only then did she learn that so many of the songs I'd written over the years had been written for her.

The photo used in our ArtPix 3D crystals was taken earlier this year at a beach near Marco Island, Florida. I ordered two matching ArtPix 3D hearts - one for her and one for me - to celebrate our incredible journey back to each other after all those years.
